As expected, MADONNA‘s performance at the  2016 Billboard Music Awards was one of (if not) the most talked-about highlight of the evening. Anticipated by fans (and anxiously dreaded by skeptics and naysayers), the Queen of Pop‘s tribute to PRINCE was met with praises and criticisms as soon as it was finished.

In an understated yet moving rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U and Purple Rain (with no less than fellow legend Stevie Wonder as her surprise guest), Madonna dominated the night with a memorable performance befitting a Prince tribute. The entire audience stood up and joined the Material Girl (who was garbed in purple in an obvious homage to the Purple One) in paying respect to her fellow 80’s icon who died unexpectedly a few weeks ago in his home.

Regardless of how the tribute was received by some Prince fans who went on social media to declare their thumbs downs or approval, Madonna’s performance (her first at the BBMAs) was truly remarkable in  underscoring Her Madgesty‘s polarizing effect on the public.

At the end of the day, what truly matters is that Madonna, perceived to be the ‘last one standing’ of the Royal Trinity of  Pop Music (with Prince and Michael Jackson) was able to pay her respects and gratitude to another friend who left us way too soon.
